September 18 Just a ReminderAre you ready for a Disaster? The city I live in sent out card to help families be ready for a disaster and I though I would share it with you. Here in the Pacific Northwest we have Mount St. Helens, and the big earthquake they keep talking about, both will be with out warning. Just be ready for any thing. There is nothing more valuable than our families.
You need a Family Locater Plan, your first concern during a disaster is the safety and where abouts of your family. How would you locate them? This is why you need a plan and share it with your family member in your home and those living else where. Make your list or chart now while your thinking clearly.
List each family member and their most logical places to look for them, be it at work, school or home maybe a friends house or a Boy Scout meeting.
Consider all times of the day, what their routines are, where their hangouts are.
Add a few co-workers, colleagues or neighbors to your list.
Don't forget to get and list cell phones and pager numbers.
Arrange the list in a way that makes sense to you. Or make a chart.
Add out of state family member or friends as a contact point for everyone. Your local service may be out but you may still be able to call long distance. Check in with that person on where you are, Talk to that member before you add them to the list let them know how important they are in this. Be sure they have a copy of your list or chart and they mark off each person as they call in and also put down there location.
Make plenty of copies of your list/chart give a copy to each family member and any one else you put on the list.
Keep a copy any where you may need it, home, office desk, car glove box, in your wallet etc.
Share the information with your baby sitters and be sure they understand what they are to do.
TALK ABOUT IT! Discuss your plan with your family and the kids make sure everyone understands what they need to do and why.. If they understand and it make sense to them they will remember it better.
Update it every time you do your bi-annual smoke alarm test or change your clocks for day light savings.
Some added advice:
You might want to talk to the parents of the kids that are at your house a lot and let them know of your plans and what is the best way to handle contacting them. You may have this child with you for a while. I can't imagine going thought something like this and not knowing where my kids were.
Get your employer to adapt this list also for employees and families. Maybe have them incorporate it into the employee safety program. Be sure it is updated as it will only be as good as the last update. Have each person bring in 3 bottles of water, several cans of food such as tuna, chile to put in a ice chest have each person write their name on the stuff they bring in. Place the chest where everyone knows where it is. Bring enough so each person has enough for 3 days. Make sure there is a battery radio in the chest also. Once a year go though the chest and make sure nothing is out dated.
It would be great if we never have to worry about any of this but you just never know. So be ready have your family ready.
September 12 Quote for the day from my daughter!'Whatever you give a woman, she is going to multiply. If you give her sperm, she'll give you a baby. If you give her a house, she'll give you a home. If you give her groceries, she'll give you a meal. If you give her a smile, she'll give you her heart. She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her. So - if you give her any crap, you will receive a ton of shit.'
September 06 Just odds and endsThe summer is almost gone, fall is in the air and winter is just around the corner. So what does all this mean? School has started Holloween is not far off and then wam!! It Thanksgiving then Christmas and then 2009. I ask you where has this year gone? We are into the 9th month and I am sure it was just mothers day. Our summer has been very mild only a few hot hot days and more rain than normal. I had to leave the porch light on when I go out because it is getting darker sooner now. But we have such beautiful days here in Oregon. Our sun sets and sun rise’s are breath taking. I have lived cost to cost and I can’t think of any where else I want to live.
I have an older brother who health is not good and we have had some times we were sure he would make it. I wrote this about him. MIKE
Brothers, what a commodity. As strong as an old oak tree. What odd fellows they can be.
Set in there ways, it hard to get them to sway. Their children love and respect them, there grand children are in aw of them.
But a sister knows the hart of the oak is gentle and loving and the outer bark is really a just a cover.
The bark is braking the limbs are bending as age and hard work take its toll. But the oak is still standing not bending easily or giving in to the pain.
But the love around that oak will help keep it standing till God calls and the angles take that oak tree from you and me.
Peace Jess
